High ping in Perth?
Get back in the game.

A fast download speed doesn't tell the whole story when you're trying to win a match. Find out whether lag is coming from your home connection, your game server or the route between them.

Know what you're measuring.

Open your game's network statistics, if available, and watch them while you play. Check frame rate too: low FPS and uneven frame times point to PC performance, while ping and packet loss describe the network connection. A VPN changes the network route; it doesn't upgrade your graphics card.

Three connection metrics that affect online gaming
MetricWhat it meansWhat to watch for
Ping / latencyThe time for data to reach the game server and return, measured in milliseconds.Delay between your actions and the server's response.
JitterHow much latency varies from one moment to the next.Ping that jumps around, even when the average looks reasonable.
Packet lossGame data that doesn't arrive at its destination.Missing updates, stutters or rubber-banding.

A speed test usually measures a connection to its own test server. Your game may use a different server and route, so compare the statistics from the game you're actually playing.

Check the basics first.

  • Try Ethernet: connect your gaming PC to the router with a cable. If the spikes disappear compared with Wi-Fi, investigate the wireless connection before changing your internet route.
  • Pause background traffic: stop game downloads, cloud backups and uploads. Check whether other devices are using the connection heavily during your match.
  • Check your game region: choose the intended server region and keep it the same during comparisons. The lowest displayed ping can help you choose where to test; geography alone doesn't tell you which route is best.
  • Look for a wider problem: if other games and devices are also disconnecting, check your router and your ISP's outage information. If only one game is affected, check the game's official service status.

When can a gaming VPN help in Perth?

Your game server may be outside Western Australia. The route your ISP takes to reach it affects the connection, alongside server distance and conditions on your home network.

Perth Gaming VPN connects your PC to a VPN server hosted in a Perth data centre. Your ISP carries that first part of the journey; our network handles the onward route to the game server. If that onward route is better than your ISP's usual path, it can reduce latency, jitter or packet loss.

It's worth testing when your home connection is stable but a particular game or region performs poorly. An already-good route may see no improvement, and a tunnel can add overhead. A VPN cannot remove the distance to a remote server or repair a faulty Wi-Fi connection.

Compare it in your own games.

Use the 7 day free trial to test the connection on your PC. Keep the same game, region, connection type and background traffic for both sessions, and compare at similar times.

  • Without the VPN: record your normal ping, spikes and packet loss. Note the server or region and how the game feels during a match.
  • With the VPN: activate WireGuard before launching the game, then join the same server or region and record the same measurements.
  • Repeat: compare more than one session, including the hours you normally play. Look for a consistent improvement rather than one good reading.

For competitive shooters such as Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT and Apex Legends, watch response and connection spikes during fights. In MMOs such as World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV, look for consistent ability response during encounters. The useful result is a connection that feels more predictable in your game.

A smoother route helps you focus on your skill, timing and teamwork. It doesn't guarantee a particular ping or a win. Keep the VPN on for the games where your comparison shows a benefit.

Still getting lag?

Email support@ozot.com.au with your ISP, game, server region, connection type, the time the issue occurs in Perth time, and your results with and without the VPN. Include network-stat screenshots if available, keeping your WireGuard configuration and private key out of them.
